Year 1 - Swallows
Year 1 – Autumn 2
This has been a jam packed half term in Year 1. The children have settled well into Swallows and adapted to their new routines. It has been amazing to see how their independence and focus on their learning is continuously developing and they keenly soaked up all their new topics. They have been particularly interested in our Life Cycle of a Pumpkin which our lovely Miss Hoppe suggested and has been updating with all the changes the cyclehas gone through to date. Our aim is for the pumpkins to grow with the children during their time in Year 1 allowing them to see that the pumpkins need to be nurtured, watered and looked after in order for them to grow. This can be compared to their growth during the year and the new learning and information they will need in order to be ready for Year 2. The pumpkin plants have now been planted outside to give them more space to grow and will hopefully survive the elements with a lot of care and attention.
In Literacy we have used our knowledge from our Science topic on Plants to write instructions on How to Grow a Sunflower. The children produced wonderful instructions with some fabulous use of adjectives to make their writing more interesting. We have been blessed with settled weather and made the most of our Forest School sessions with Mr Johnson to extend our Science learning, from the classroom, outside. We had a fantastic lesson with Mr J on what a plant needs to grow and this has really helped to embed what the children have been learning.
All too often we take our wonderful surroundings for granted and the children have spent time in the reflection garden taking in the wonders of nature with their senses. Listening to the birds and wind blowing through the trees while enjoying the peaceful setting they thought about what our value this term of compassion means to them and how they have shown compassion to someone close to them or a classmate. It tied in beautifully with Remembrance Day and gave the children time to ask questions and consider why we should show kindness and compassion to one another. We had a lovely Christingle assembly and this gave us the opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and reflect on how this might have changed.
The children have ended our half-term on a high by giving a delightful Nativity performance which they have spent many hours rehearsing for. I am so proud of each and every one of the children and their attitude to learning. I wish you all a restful festive season and look forward to seeing the children in January raring to tackle the new term.
