Year 1 - Swallows

Welcome to Year 1 at St Mark's Primary School.

The class teacher is Mr Norman and the TA is Miss Hoppe.

A typical day in year 1

Every morning, the children begin their day by completing a 'flashback 4' which are questions based on the maths learning for that day/week.

Then we move onto phonics. Phonics at St Marks, Swanage is taught by stage not age. This allows all the children to access the correct curriculum for their stage. In Year 1, the children begin the year recapping phase 3 sounds and then move onto phase 5 (phase 5 is taught for the remainder of the year).

Guided reading in Year 1 is daily and each day we look at a different aspect of guided reading. Monday's, we practice our spellings for the week, Tuesdays we have handwriting practice (either common exception words or sounds we have learnt in phonics that week), Wednesdays we have a class guided reading lesson, Thursdays we read a class text and the children have a small class quiz after reading/listening to the story and Fridays we work on copying sentences correctly by using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

After our guided reading lesson, we will always have a maths lesson. During these lessons, the children will use a variety of resources from number lines to our bamboo rings. Below is the outline for maths covered in Year 1.

Spring Place value (20), Addition & Subtraction (20), Place value (50), Length and height, Mass and volume
