Swallows and Kingfishers - Year 1 and Year 2

Welcome to Year 1 and 2 at St Mark's Primary School.

In our class we have our teacher, Miss Edwards and our Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Miss Hoppe. We learn with, and alongside, our friends in Year 2.

A typical day in year 1 and 2

Curriculum Overview 2023-24 Y1-2

In the morning we begin our day by completing our spellings for the week and practising our joined handwriting.

We then move onto stage not age phonics. This means that your child's learning is individualised to meet their needs. In Year 2 we begin Phase 6 learning which focuses on learning spelling rules and applying spelling patterns as well as reinforcing phase 5 sounds.

In Guided reading we look at books which expose the children to lots of new vocabulary. Each day we focus on a different element of reading comprehension and complete tasks based on this. The books that we cover are outlined below.

TermBooks
Autumn Flo of the Somme, Where the poppies now grow, Giganotosaurus
SpringThe dinosaur that pooped a planet, Lila and the secret of rain
SummerThe tear thief

Afterwards, we go into our maths lessons, these are often practical sessions with children exploring a range of mathematical equipment to support their learning.

We are lucky enough to be able to offer each child a snack at break time and they can choose from hot buttery toast or a piece of fruit.

After break time we start our literacy lessons, these are often taught based around a class text. We base our writing around a high quality book and we cover a range of writing genres.
